Connect a domain you already own

Point a web address you bought somewhere else (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace and so on) at your ColibriOS website.

Already have a domain? Keep it where it is and point it at your ColibriOS website. You add two records where you bought the domain, and ColibriOS does the rest.

Steps

  1. Open Website > Domain.
  2. Press I already own one.
  3. Type your domain (for example, serenityretreats.com) and press Request.
  4. The card now shows the exact records to add. Sign in where you bought the domain: GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace, Wix, SiteGround and so on. Look for a section called “DNS”, “Manage DNS”, “Advanced DNS” or “Zone editor”.
  5. Add the records from the card. For a main domain, that is an A record at @ and a CNAME record at www. For a subdomain (like retreats.yoursite.com), it is one CNAME record. Use the copy buttons so nothing gets mistyped.
  6. Back in ColibriOS, press I’ve added the records.
  7. We finish the connection and wait for the security certificate. The card turns green and says Live when your domain loads your site.

Good to know

  • Most domains update within an hour. Some hosts take up to a day.
  • In the name box, type exactly what the card says, never the whole address. Some hosts want the domain itself or an empty box instead of @. They all mean the same thing.
  • Leave the TTL on whatever your host suggests.
  • Already have another A record at @ pointing to an old website? Delete it and keep only the new one. Two A records send visitors to both places at random.
  • Leave your email alone. Don’t change any MX, SPF, DKIM or TXT records. This only moves your website.
  • These records do not turn on email from your domain. That is a separate step: see Send email from your own domain. It is worth doing while your domain host is still open.
  • Typed the wrong domain? Press Change domain or Cancel request while it is waiting.
  • Once the domain shows Live, every link ColibriOS hands out uses it on its own. There is no setting to change.
  • A domain of your own is part of ColibriOS Pro, and only the workspace owner can connect one.
  • Don’t have a domain yet? You can buy one inside ColibriOS instead.
