Create an online course
Build a self-paced course from modules and lessons, then publish it for free or paid enrollment.
A course is a set of lessons people work through at their own pace. You build it in modules (the sections) and lessons, then publish it on your site for free or paid enrollment.
Steps
- Open Selling > Courses and click New course.
- Enter a Title, a Description and a Price (0 for free), then click Create course. It starts as a draft.
- Click the course to open it. Add a Cover image and check the Course web address. Each setting saves when you click out of it.
- Under Curriculum, click Add module and type the module’s title.
- In the module, click Add lesson. Give it a Title and choose a Content type: Writing, Video, Photo, Audio or PDF.
- Paste a link (a YouTube or Vimeo link works for video) or click Upload file. Add a description if you like, then click Save.
- To attach a worksheet or handout, open the saved lesson again and add files to it.
- When the course is ready, set Status to published. A Share box with the course’s link appears at the top of the page.
What students get
Students sign in at your site’s /students page with their email and a 6-digit code (no password). Lessons open in a classroom with your name and logo, a progress bar and a Mark complete and continue button. Finishing every lesson unlocks a certificate.
Good to know
- Paid courses need Stripe. See Connect Stripe to take card payments.
- With Show on public site off, the course is link only: it isn’t on your courses page, but anyone with the link can enroll.
- Switch Published off on a lesson or module to keep building it while the course is live. Students don’t see it, and it doesn’t count toward their progress.
- Add a quiz after any module (the checklist icon on the module’s row) or click Add a final quiz. Quizzes never lock anyone out.
- For paid courses, Payment plans on the public page lets buyers split the price into monthly payments. See Payment plans you run.
- Want to release modules over time? See Release course modules over time.
- Moving a course from another platform? See Move a course over from another platform.
- The duplicate icon on the Courses list copies a course with all its modules and lessons, as a draft.
